Being a fan of Rioja I discovered this wine during a partial round trip through Spain. It’s a medium bodied wine, full of rich fruity flavour. In short; a great quality wine at a reasonable price. Like the preceding years 2017 was a very good year for this Beronia Crianza, even though the 2017 vintage would be a little too young for a Rioja. So for the most satisfying result I would decant and leave it for a good while before serving. Doing so I quite enjoyed it and will order again. The 2017 Crianza apparently has a very very good aging capacity. I’m quite interested in history and was interest to learn that the the Beronia name refers to the ancient lands of Rioja that were first settled by the Berones, a tribe of Celtic warriors from the 3rd century B.C. But it gets even bette if you dig a little into to this Rioja’s production process; the Beronia Crianza is produced through a process of slow fermentation under a controlled temperature, while pumpovers ensure extraction of aroma and the colour. The wine spends 24 in deposits and mixed barrels with American oak staves and French oak bottoms. The 2017 Crainza gets its character from the mid-April hard frost at the start of its vegetative cycle that was followed by a period of drought. The vintage entered its last phase of the cycle with an outstanding health status as the rest of the year passed smoothly. I didn’t make this up and I’m not sure that I can identify all these aspect in the taste. But the knowledge of all these facts makes it even nicer to enjoy.

A smooth medium bodied fragrant wine. Perfect for the summer and great value for money. Now that I’ve tried this, I’m tempted to explore the Gran Reserva next, as I tend to prefer a fuller-bodied Rioja. Overall, a very enjoyable bottle.

Took this round to the neighbours get together at the weekend - it went down a storm. We got through 12 bottles of red between us and everyone agreed the Beronia was the best of everything (the other wines included Australian, Italian and French reds). And it looks impressive as such a big bottle! Really smooth, nicely oaky but not in your face. Cheaper than a house red on a restaurant list this was £25 well spent. Am going to get some more for Christmas day - and I am going to try the Reserva too as I see Amazon have that in magnums too.

Had this wine with my book club ladies last night, and it went down a storm! Just the right level of sweetness - very fruity but not in the slightest bit cloying. Compared to the couple of bottles of French pink we also had, this Spanish Rioja Rose was far more complex and interesting with a much more pronounced flavour. Will definitely buy again and get a case next time!

Vino D.O.Ca.
